How to give your skin an at home facial

Facials can make your skin look positively luminous. Unfortunately, they often come with a steep price tag. A good alternative is to give yourself a facial in the comfort of your own home. Not sure where to start? Read on for all the products and tips you need for an at-home spa day.

Step #1 Secure Your Hair

You want to be able to work on your face without getting any product into your hair. Pull you hair back into a ponytail or bun.

Step #2 Remove Your Make Up

An important step in your facial is to remove the makeup and dirt that might be lingering on your skin. Use a product like Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water All-in-One Waterproof, which can remove all traces of foundation, mascara, and blush off of your skin and eyes. You can also use a gentle, rinse-off cleansing product to remove everything with lukewarm water. Gently pat any leftover water off of your face.

Step #3 Time to Exfoliate

Apply a gentle exfoliating scrub onto your skin and gently rub. Don’t massage too harshly as this can hurt your skin. A great product to slough off dead skin cells from the surface of skin and works great even on oily skin is Garnier SkinActive’s Clean+ Blackhead Eliminating Scrub. Rinse everything off to make sure your face is fully clean.

Step #4 Steam It Up

Steam is a relaxing and beneficial part of spa facials. Luckily, you can recreate this luxurious step at home even if you don’t have a professional face steamer. Simply saturate a washcloth in hot water then wring until it is damp. Leave the washcloth on your skin for a few minutes to soak in the spa ambiance and prep for a facial routine.

Step #5 Mask Time

Once your skin is clean and receptive to products now is the time to apply a mask tailored to your skin’s specific needs. If your skin is oily or acne-prone, opt for a clay mask to help draw out impurities. Apply and let the mask do its work on your skin. Let it rest just until just before the mask starts to dry — while it looks and feels super fun once the mask is dry, allowing this to happen can rob your skin of precious moisture.

Do you have dry skin? You’re the perfect candidate for a nourishing and hydrating mask. Choose a mask formulated with hydrating ingredients like humectants and emollients to restore moisture and help your skin’s barrier function.

If you have sensitive skin a calming mask is right for you. Choose a mask formulated with calming ingredients such as chamomile to help soothe your skin.

If you have normal, blemish-free skin, use a mask that can help improve the brightness of your skin’s appearance. Find one formulated with citric or glycolic acid which can brighten and leave you with a fresh, even-toned complexion.

Step #6 Take Care of Your Eyes and lips

Our eyes and lips are often neglected, so a facial is the most opportune time to devote some attention to these areas. If you don’t have an eye mask on hand, take a slice of cucumber or a cool spoon to chill this area. Apply an eye cream or gel formulated with pro-retinol like Garnier SkinActive Ultra-Lift Anti-Wrinkle Eye Cream to diminish the appearance of fine lines.

Step #7 Massage in Moisturizer

You’ve applied a lot of great products so now it’s time to seal everything in with a moisturizer. Your regular moisturizer is fine, but you can also kick it up a notch with a thicker cream like Garnier Miracle Anti-Fatigue Sleeping Cream. Massage it into your skin before bed in an upward motion andwork the product into your skin.
