What Does Non-Comedogenic Mean?

“Non-comedogenic” refers to a product that is formulated to help reduce potential blockage of visible pores. “Comedo” is the term used to describe a blocked pore. Products that state that they are designed with a non-comedogenic formula can help beautify your skin with a reduced chance of blocking your pores.

In order to determine if a product is non-comedogenic, it is tested in a lab. “To claim a product is non-comedogenic, we conduct a non-comedogenic test, monitored by dermatologists,” says Nannan Chen, Associate Principal Scientist of Garnier Scientific Affairs. “In the dermatologist-controlled test, people with oily skin or combination skin are specifically recruited to see if there is any increase in comedones. If the usage of the product does not result in any negative effect on the skin of the panelists, we can say the product is non-comedogenic.”

Why is it important to use non-comedogenic products?

Blocked pores can prevent your skin from looking its best and can result in blemishes. This is because your skin may not be able to expel excess oil and sebum as it should. Products such as moisturizers should be hydrating but not so thick that your skin can no longer breathe. Keep an eye out for the word non-comedogenic if you want to help keep your pores from becoming clogged yet still want to hydrate your skin. It’s important to find the best moisturizer for your skin type to ensure healthy-looking, glowing skin.
